Research Status

Engaged in Computer Area Research for 54 years, I have taken part or in charge of building many computer systems, including the systems of vacuum tube, transistor, small /medium scale integrated circuit and VLSI. Formerly, my research interest had been focused on Advanced Processor Architecture and Instruction Level Parallelism. Afterwards, it has been transferred into High Performance Computing. Since I was appointed as the Chief Scientist of High Performance Computing, I started building a cluster computer system at Tsinghua University in 1996. And then, I led the team to build a large-scale cluster computing system “Zi-Qiang 2000” at Shanghai University in 1999. It is considered as one of the first HPC systems built by cluster technology in China. Following it, I led the team to build a cluster HPC system for Shenzhen University “Shen-Chao -21C”. That ranked the 146th of World Top 500 (www.top500.org ) in 2003. Then I led the team to install another cluster HPC “Zi-Qiang 3000” at Shanghai University, which ranked the 126th of World Top 500 in 2004. Since 2000, I have proposed and was in charge of the Key Research Item of Chinese Ministry of Education “Pilot Project: Advance Computational Infrastructure ACI”. Actually it was the first research program on Grid Computing in China. From 2004, I have been in charge of “Shanghai High Education Grid”, sponsored by Shanghai Education Commission with grant of RMB 20 Million.
