Research Overview
Jiannan Wang’s research centers on database and data science systems, aiming to build high-performance, easy-to-use, and intelligent software systems for data management, analytics, and AI. He proposed the task-centric paradigm for data preparation and led the development of two widely adopted open-source systems, DataPrep and ConnectorX, which have together been downloaded over 15 million times. ConnectorX has been adopted by Huawei GaussDB (DWS) as well as open-source projects Modin and Polars. He also developed SampleClean, a core module in the Berkeley Big Data Analytics Stack, and its successor ActiveClean, which received the SIGMOD 2016 Best Demonstration Award. In the area of crowdsourced data management, he proposed and implemented the human-in-the-loop system CrowdER,which was incorporated into graduate courses at the University of Pennsylvania, Georgia Tech, and Columbia University, with related publications cited over 1,000 times.
Jiannan Wang has served as General Co-Chair of VLDB 2023, PhD Symposium Chair of ICDE 2022, Associate Editor of VLDB 2021, and Core PC member of SIGMOD 2019. He also founded the VLDB CloudDB Workshop and the VLDB Industry Challenge and Vision Workshop. He has led six research grants from Canada’s Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and five industry-sponsored projects. According to Google Scholar, his publications have received over 6,000 citations, including 17 papers cited more than 100 times, with an H-index of 36. His research has been recognized with multiple honors, including the VLDB 2021 Best Experiments and Analysis Paper Award (the first time awarded to a Chinese scholar), the 2020 CS-Can|Info-Can Outstanding Early Career Researcher Award (Canada’s highest honor for young scholars in computer science), the IEEE TCDE 2018 Rising Star Award (only the second time awarded to a Chinese scholar), the ACM SIGMOD 2016 Best Demonstration Award, the 2013 CCF Distinguished Dissertation Award, and the 2011 Google PhD Fellowship.
