On the morning of March 18th, 2025, Professor Qian Xuehai, Vice Director of the Institute of High Performance Computing, hosted the visit of Professor Josep Torrellas from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the Ziqiang Technology Building. Professor Torrellas delivered a distinguished lecture titled “Accelerating Cloud Native Environments”. It is also the first lecture in the Frontier of Computing Lecture Series of the institute. During the lecture, he shared unique insights of the hardware and software co-design for today’s cloud native environments. The academic event attracted wide audiences of more than 40 students and researchers from various departments at Tsinghua University and other institutions including Peking University, Chinese Academy of Science and Shanghai Jiaotong University.

Professor Josep Torrellas’s Distinguished Lecture
During his visit, Professor Torrellas had in-depth discussions with researchers and students in the computer architecture research community in China, particularly on topics related to future architecture for AI, hardware security, and the computer architecture research trends. He also explored opportunities for research collaboration and academic exchange with Tsinghua University.
Josep Torrellas is a well-known leading researcher in computer architecture. He is an ACM/IEEE/AAAS Fellow and the Director of the SRC/DARPA JUMP 2.0 ACE Center for Evolvable Computing. Over more than three decades, he has made fundamental contribution in various topics such as shared-memory multiprocessor architectures, thread-level speculation, low-power computer architecture, hardware security and hardware/software co-design. This visit further strengthened the cooperative ties between Tsinghua University and internationally renowned academic institutions, laying a solid foundation for future research collaborations.
